City dues

Sky above, potholed streets below where
beggarly traffic moves in
fragments around cops with white gloves;
women and men walking
back and forth over glue and subway vents;
blind cats in alleys looking
around rusty trash cans for blind dogs. ….
the discolored poor living
in murder, prostitution, looking for results
beyond death; fire hydrants
sparkling water in asphalt heat. ….flatfoots
like rum-drinkers with guns;
author in a loft with binoculars, writing a
novel with ink dipped in an
open sore. ….the city dues and rent for
breathing remains to be
made from a lack of jurisprudence.
